Dental discolouration is an incredibly common phenomenon that affects people, no matter their dental hygiene routine. No matter how often some people brush, floss, or visit the dentist, they can have persistent staining. While staining is only a cosmetic problem it can make people feel self-conscious, think that others assume they do not take care of their teeth when they do everything they can. If you do not like the discolouration on your teeth, different whitening options can make your smile radiant once again.
There are an incredible amount of whitening options nowadays available on the market, some at home and some at the dentist’s office. There are home remedies, over-the-counter at home products, and professional in-office and at-home products that can be done by a dentist. Results will always vary, depending on the level of staining and your dental health, but depending on what treatment you choose you have the potential to be very satisfied with the outcome of your treatment.
There are three main teeth whitening systems: home remedies, over-the-counter, and professional products from a dentist. Here are the pros and cons of each treatment option.
Whitening your teeth at home with homemade remedies sounds great, but the results vary wildly and are nowhere near as guaranteed as professional methods.
Some common methods are using baking soda or hydrogen peroxide, oil pulling, apple cider vinegar, and activated charcoal.
These products are very low in cost, which is one reason they are very popular.
The reality of these products is that they have very little to no teeth whitening abilities. They are, however, preventative. Being antibacterial in nature, using these methods helps prevent your teeth from discolouring any further than they currently are. While they cannot do much to whiten teeth, they can help your teeth stay white.
Using over-the-counter teeth whitener is convenient because you can do it at home and you do not have to go to your dentist.
There are whitening toothpaste, strips, and trays, each of which has different levels of success.
The price range of these products is around $5.00 to $50.00 depending on the product that you use.
These products have some success, however, they can have some downsides. Whitening strips, for instance, can be difficult to place correctly and you may miss the areas between your teeth which results in uneven whitening (the spaces between your teeth will still be discoloured while the front of your teeth will be whitened). Take care while using these products, results may vary.
Getting your teeth whitened professionally guarantees results, but you do have to set time aside to go to your dentist, either to pick up the kit or to receive treatment.
There are two types of treatment; in-office and a take-home kit.
The price for treatment varies and is quite expensive. It ranges from $500 to $1000 and depends a lot on how long your treatment is and if you are getting one or both arches treated (upper and lower teeth).
The plus side to a professional whitening treatment is that your results are guaranteed, especially if you get the treatment in-office (at-home whitening is always open to user error).
